    Restylane vs. Botox

    Last updated 2 years ago

With dermal injectables, such as Restylane and Botox, making up such a large percentage of the procedures that plastic surgeons perform, it’s unfortunate that many people don’t know the differences between the two.

Aiming to do the same thing, reducing the signs of aging, Restylane and Botox go about it in totally different ways.

    ?     How Botox Works
Botox is, famously, a protein derivative of botulinum toxin. It is injected into the fine lines and wrinkles of the face to eliminate frown lines between the eyebrows, forehead creases, and crow’s feet. It can also be used to treat moderate to severe lines on the neck. Studies show that Botox can also help in the correction of nasolabial folds, underneath the lower lip, or in the treatment of vertical creases above the upper lip. Nonetheless, the treatment of these areas with Botox is not very common.

Botox works by temporarily paralyzing the muscles underneath the skin, allowing the muscles to relax and give skin a smoother surface to rest on.

    ?     How Restylane Works
Restylane, while also an injectable, accomplishes the same types of results a little differently. Restylane is a natural hyaluronic acid gel, which is a fancy way of saying it is a natural product similar to collagen. It works by giving the skin more volume in order to eliminate wrinkles. It is mainly used to treat moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds around the mouth such as:

    • laugh lines (nasolabial folds)
    • marionette lines (the area that extends downward from the corners of the mouth to the jawline)
    • lipstick lines (creases above the upper lip)
    • Corners of the mouth

    Which is Right For You?
Your plastic surgeon can discuss your options with you, but ultimately the decision is up to you. Each procedure has its own benefits. Discuss which option is best for you with your plastic surgeon, instead of just getting the “trendy” procedure regardless of whether or not it is right for you.

Botox and Restylane procedures are cheap enough that shopping around for the best-qualified plastic surgeon is the best way to go about it.
